Thursday, January 25, 2007
6:30 pm
Room 1219 International Affairs Building

Rafis Abazov (Harriman Institute, Columbia University)

Rafis Abazov will talk about his new book, The Culture and Customs of the Central Asian Republics (Greenwood Press, 2007). The focus of the talk will be contemporary development in the intricate cultural landscape of Central Asia and post-Iron-Curtain phenomena, for example, the return of nearly forgotten traditions and the resurgence of Islamic identity. The author will also discuss why the major metropolitan areas in the region have welcomed Western culture, in sharp contrast to its poor reception in neighboring Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East.

Tea and snacks will be served.
