Pippa Norris (McGuire Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard) and Jan Kubik (Professor and Director of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College London) will discuss the various manifestations of liberal populism-past and current, mainstream and fringe- in both Eastern and Western Europe. The panel, with discussant Sheri Berman (Professor of Political Science at Barnard College) and moderator Alan Timberlake (Director of the East Central European Center at Columbia University), will probe issues such as the origins of illiberal populism and its effects on the political systems in Europe and the future of the European Union.
