Harriman Atrium 12th Floor, International Affairs Building 420 West 118th St

This is the first US reading by Ivan Jirous, the legendary Czech poet and philosopher who coined the term "parallel polis" during Czechoslovak normalization, and who managed the Plastic People of the Universe. He will read a selection of his poetry and a few excerpts from his samizdat-era and contemporary essays (in Czech with English translation). He will then join Ivan Bierhanzl, a prominent member of the Czechoslovak musical underground who became a member of the Plastic People in the 1980s and who continues to be their video archivist, in discussion, which will be moderated by Columbia's Czech culture professor Chris Harwood. A small selection of never before seen underground films from the 1960s and 1970s will be played, including a recently unearthed film by a FAMU student from Uruguay, Cesare de Ferrari, made in 1969.
