Elise Giuliano Discusses Identity Politics in Ukraine in POST-SOVIET AFFAIRS

Monday, April 30, 2018

Elise Giuliano, Lecturer in Political Science; Director of Graduate Studies, Harriman Institute, published an article in a special issue of Post-Soviet Affairs on identity politics in Ukraine: "Who supported separatism in Donbas? Ethnicity and popular opinion at the start of the Ukraine crisis." She finds, contrary to conventional wisdom, that support for separatism in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk at the start of the Ukraine crisis was driven by local economic interests and by a sense of abandonment by Kyiv after Maidan, and not by Russian language and pro-Russia foreign policy concerns.
