Casey Michel ('15) on Kyrgyzstan's Civil Liberties Clampdown

Casey Michel ('15) argues that Russian influence has "filled the vacuum" in Kyrgyzstan after U.S. withdrawal from the Manas air base. "Kyrgyzstan stands as the nearest thing to a success story Central Asia can find," he writes in The Moscow Times. This, he laments, makes it all the more disconcerting that the country is mimicking Russia's repressive legislation.

Students on Global Scholars Course Visit Moscow State University Journalism School

On June 19, 2014, Global Scholar Students from Columbia visited the School of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University. Dean Elena Vartanova delivered a lecture about the development of the Internet connection in Russian cities. Students were also introduced to a variety of English-language programs for international students at MSU and explored the building on a campus tour.
