Chinghiz Aitmatov at 90: Photography by Askarbek Abdygulov

The Harriman Institute, the Kyrgyz American Foundation, and the American University of Central Asia present this exhibit featuring works by photographer by Askarbek Abdygulov. Abdygulov presents unique moments from the life and work of renowned Soviet and Kyrgyz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov starting in 1971 and continuing almost to the end of Aimatov’s life.

For this exhibition, Abdygulov has selected rare photographs of the great Kyrgyz author with various people from farmers to Kyrgyzstan’s first president, as well as photos drawn from international conferences and symposia.

Artist

Askarbek Abdygulov has won prizes at photographic exhibitions both local and international. He is the author of three books and the curator of documentary material for the book A Man for the Ages, devoted to Chingiz Aitmatov. Between 1980 and 2005, Abdygulov was the official photographer for the Kyrgyz parliament and for the first president of Kyrgyzstan, Askar Akaev.

This exhibit is presented in association with the three-day series Celebrating Chinghiz Aitmatov at 90organized by the Harriman Institute, the Kyrgyz American Foundation, and the American University of Central Asia. This event series also includes a lecture on literature, an international conference, a book talk, and film screenings.
