Please join the Ukrainian Film Club at Columbia University an the Harriman Institute for a screening of the documentary film Free People, directed by Hanna Yarovenko.

Language: Ukrainian with English subtitles.

This is a story about how a group of folk musicians singlehandedly revived the half-forgotten art of ancient Ukrainian music that used to be performed by itinerant kobza- and lira-players. Director Hanna Yarovenko takes the viewer on an unforgettable journey into the heartland of Ukraine as a group of musicians strives to rekindle popular interest in the music tradition that once defined Ukrainians as a people and inspired generations of composers.

Yuri Shevchuk will introduce the film and lead its discussion.
