World Leaders Forum presents “Emerging Crises and Competing Narratives,” a conversation with Zoran Milanović, President of the Republic of Croatia, and Jan Svejnar, Richard N. Gardner Professor of Economics and International Affairs, and Director of the Center on Global Economic Governance. Welcome and Introduction by Amy E. Hungerford, Executive Vice President for Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Croatia sits at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe. The country’s emergence as an independent state and its entry into the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union provides a unique perspective on current global crises. President Milanović served as Prime Minister of Croatia from 2011-2016, during which time he had a direct role in negotiating Croatia’s entrance into the European Union.

This discussion will explore the challenges democracies are facing today, including mass migration, human rights, populism, activist politics, and the battle of narratives during a pandemic.

Cosponsored by the Center on Global Economic Governance, the Harriman Institute, and Columbia Global Centers.
