Carol Ueland, former Harriman Visiting Scholar and Columbia Slavic Ph.D. alumna, is the translator, with Robert Carnevale, of "Apollo in the Grass" by Aleksandr Kushner, just released by Farrar Straus Giroux. Kushner, born in Leningrad in 1936, is certainly one of the most distinguished poets writing in Russian today. This volume of Kushner's poetry follows Ueland's earlier translation of "Apollo in the Snow" (FSG, 1991). Ueland teaches Russian language and literature at Drew University, where she directs the Russian program. Her scholarly work and translations focus on Russian poetry and Russian women's writing.
