Yuri Shevchuk, lecturer of Ukrainian language at Columbia University, appeared live on “In Black and White," a show on Ukraine's national public radio, Hromadske. Shevchuck, who teaches Ukrainian to students at Columbia and Yale, discussed his teaching methodology.
Last summer, Shevchuk's former student Ainsley Katz had appeared on the same show, fielding questions from the host and listeners for nearly an hour, all in Ukrainian. Ainsley had studied with Shevchuk for two semesters at the elementary level and then took an intensive one-month intermediate level course at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv paid for by the Ukrainian Studies Program at Columbia. Radio host, Yaryna Skurativska, interviewed Shevchuk about how his students could achieve that level of competency in Ukrainian after just two semesters of study.
