Alexander Cooley on Central Asia’s Place in a Transforming Global Order
January 22, 2021

Alexander Cooley and Daniel Nexon argue in a piece for the Foreign Policy Research Institute and the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs that President Biden may not be able to return the U.S. to its position of global dominance. Drawing on arguments from their book Exit from Hegemony: The Unravelling of the American Global Order they explain that the U.S. was losing its global dominance even before the Trump Administration came to power. They identify “three distinct pathways of hegemonic unraveling” and use the example of Central Asia to show the effects of all three. Read the piece on the Foreign Policy Research Institute website or at the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs.
