Alexander Cooley (Claire Tow Professor of Political Science, Barnard College; Director, Harriman Institute) and coauthor Tatyana Margolin wrote an opinion piece for Just Security urging Western donors and institutions to better support journalists who have been exiled by autocratic governments.
“Authoritarians force journalists into exile and then stigmatize them as hopelessly out of touch with local developments,” they write. “Western media outlets and donors that accept this framing may inadvertently support this deliberate erasure of dissenting voices.”
