Please join the Harriman Institute for an in-person only event with Michael Kimmage. Moderated by Alexander Cooley.
The Trump Administration’s closure of USAID and dramatic reduction in support for NGOs and independent media activities has severely impacted the activity of civil society in the post-Communist states. For over 30 years, the Harriman Institute has actively supported research on these sectors and placed students in government and non-governmental organizations engaged on in civil society development in the region. The Harriman Institute is delighted to welcome Michael Kimmage, professor of History at Catholic University and Director of the Kennan Institute, an independent think tank in Washington, DC. Professor Kimmage will discuss the events surrounding the funding and operations of the storied Wilson Center in Washington DC, in 2025, including the Kennan Institute, for decades one of the most influential centers of research and policy discussion about Russia and Eurasia. He will also discuss plans for the relaunch of Kennan 2.0 and reflect upon the prospects for regional experts in a changing foreign-policy environment.
