Cali Nathanson’s region of study is Russia, with a focus on the Russian Arctic. Her research interests lie primarily in European energy security, the geopolitics of Russian energy exports, Russia’s Arctic policy, the Sino-Russian Arctic partnership, Russian Arctic environmental security, and the impact of climate change on indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. She received her B.A. in Religion & Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Smith College, and spent a summer abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia, between her junior and senior years of undergrad. During her summer in St. Petersburg, she completed language immersion courses at the Higher School of Economics and participated in a volunteer internship at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera).
