Maria Turchenkova, a freelance photojournalist who has reported extensively from Ukraine and the North Caucasus. Ms. Turchenkova was the fellowship’s first photojournalist, and her thought provoking public panel, photo exhibits and multimedia project presented on the Columbia University campus (with much of her work during the fellowship coordinated with Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism), expanded the dimensions of the fellowship in innovative ways. Ms. Turchenkova’s work has appeared in Le MondeTIMEThe New York TimesVolkskrantDer SpiegelThe GuardianThe TimesLa RepubblicaNovaya Gazeta and others. In 2013, she was a finalist of Getty Images’ Emerging Talent. In 2014, Turchenkova was selected as “PDN’s [Photo District News] 30: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch.”
