Misha is interested in the history of the Russian Empire and the early Soviet period (specifically focusing on changing geopolitical goals and ambitions), contemporary Russian foreign policy, Russian security strategy in its near abroad, the role of the Russian language and the Russian ethnic diaspora in the former Soviet Union (issues of identity and historical memory), and Russian economic policy following sanctions. He is currently working on a study of Russian identity in the Baltic republics.
