Timothy M. Frye (Marshall D. Shulman Professor of Post-Soviet Foreign Policy) published Weak Strongman: The Limits of Power in Putin’s Russia (Princeton University Press, April 2021), a book that looks beyond Putin to analyze how Russia functions.
“Russian politics follow patterns common to a subset of authoritarian regimes that political scientists call ‘personalist autocracies.’ Studying this type of system, rather than studying the man himself, is the best way to understand Putin’s Russia,” he writes in an excerpt of the book published in Foreign Affairs.
