Valentina Izmirlieva is a member of the 2025-26 Fellowship cohort at Columbia’s Institute for Ideas & Imagination in Paris. During the Fellowship, Izmirlieva will be working on a monograph about the militarization of Russian Christianity under Vladimir Putin, asking how cooperation between the Orthodox Church and the military in contemporary Russia has transformed religious practices and their political utility for the state.
