BBC Turkish Service recently interviewed Elidor Mëhilli on the Albanian prime minister’s proposal to set up a Muslim micro-state for the Bektashi community in Tirana, Albania, with the aim of promoting “a tolerant version of Islam.” The announcement has been widely discussed across international media outlets. Mëhilli shared his historical perspective on the prosecution of religious communities under the Albanian dictatorship, and ongoing challenges with property restitution and territorial disputes in Albania.
Earlier this summer, Mëhilli contributed a reflection for BBC Weekend on the death of the Man Booker International Prize-winning author Ismail Kadare, as well as an obituary for a leading Albanian-language magazine.
