Throughout Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the Russians have targeted non-military areas and Ukrainian infrastructure. Various parts of Ukrainian society will need to be rebuilt, including the energy sector, and this is problematic as experts predict that Eastern Europe is approaching another cold winter. Despite this chaos, the Ukrainians have taken steps to enhance their energy security during this uncertain time. Ukraine has integrated its natural gas and electricity markets with Europe, making it less dependent on Russian energy. The Ukrainians are also cutting their usage of fossil fuels, and they are investing in renewable energy. This could see Ukraine become a leader in green energy on the European continent.
To discuss this in further detail, Mark Temnycky will provide insights on Ukraine’s energy sector during the war. He is a Ukrainian-American who has been working as a defense procurement contractor supporting the U.S. Department of Defense for six years. Mr. Temnycky is also a nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, and an accredited freelance journalist who has been covering Eurasian affairs for eight years. His articles have been published by news outlets and think tanks such as The New York Times, Forbes, the Daily Mail, The Hill, Newsweek, Defense News, the Kyiv Independent, the Kyiv Post, EUobserver, Euronews, Euromaidan Press, the Atlantic Council, Wilson Center, Center for European Policy Analysis, and Modern War Institute. His publications have been referenced and shared by the European Parliament, NATO Library, NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence, NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, Helsinki Commission, RAND Corporation, Transparency International, the American Bar Association, The Washington Post, Radio Free Europe, and various other American and European government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and news outlets. Mr. Temnycky has been interviewed by organizations such as FIFA, BBC, UK Channel 4, France 24, NBC, Business Insider, and Newsweek, and he has been on podcasts with The Telegraph, Voice of America, Chatham House, the Carnegie Council, and Razom for Ukraine. He has guest lectured on Eurasian affairs to university students at the U.S. Military Academy, National Defense University, Purdue University, Le Moyne College, Iowa State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan, Boston University, and several other U.S. colleges and universities.
