Please join us to celebrate the life and career of our beloved colleague, mentor and friend, Elizabeth Kridl Valkenier. Graduate of the Russian Institute (’51), Valkenier earned her Ph.D. at Columbia in 1973 in Russian history. Her books include “Russian Realist Art. The State and Society: The Peredvizhniki and Their Tradition” (Ardis, 1977; Columbia UP, 1989), “The Soviet Union and the Third World: An Economic Bind” (Praeger, 1983), and “Valentin Serov: Portraits of Russian’s Silver Age” (Northwestern UP, 2001). “From Realism to the Silver Age: New Studies in Russian Artistic Culture: Essays in Honor of Elizabeth Kridl Valkenier” (Northern Illinois University Press, 2014) collects 13 essays by Western and Russian scholars, who develop major themes inspired by Valkenier’s work.
