Please join the Ukrainian Film Club at Columbia University for a screening and discussion of the war drama “Beshoot,” 2019 by director Ivan TymchenkoYuri Shevchuk will introduce the film and moderate the post-screening discussion.

The soldiers of the Donbas Volunteer Battalion are at the center of this war drama inspired by real-life events unfolding at the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014. Two Ukrainian fighters who, with thousands of others volunteered to repel the enemy’s onslaught at their homeland are trying to get out of the Russian-surrounded Ilovaisk, a city in south-eastern Ukraine. “Beshoot” is an outstanding exemplar of citizen-filmmaking shot and produced without a government funding. Theatrically released in Ukraine under the title “Ilovaisk 2014” in early September, the film was enthusiastically received by viewers.

In Ukrainian and Russian with English subtitles.
