The Harriman Institute is pleased to cosponsor First Look 2022, the Museum of the Moving Image’s acclaimed festival of innovative new international cinema. Join us for a screening of the 2021 film Babi Yar. Context, directed by Sergei Loznitsa.

Dir. Sergei Loznitsa. Netherlands/Ukraine. 2021, 121 mins. In Russian and Ukrainian with English subtitles. DCP.

A jury prize winner at both Cannes and IDFA, Loznitsa’s latest film constructed entirely of archival footage (following The EventThe Trial, and State Funeral) is a meticulous recounting of the events at Babi Yar, a ravine on the outskirts of Kyiv where, in 1941, one of the largest mass executions in the history of the Holocaust took place. Though exhaustively researched and reconstructed, this historical document is also a work of fury, a redress and wake-up call three quarters of a century in the making. New York premiere.
