“Wartime Posters” is a long-term art project of patriotic open-air exhibitions in the frontline city of Zaporizhzhia (Ukraine) founded in 2022 at the initiative of curators Gennadiy Kozub and Olena Speranska in cooperation with the Department of Culture and Tourism of Zaporizhzhia City Council.

During 2022-2023, 19 outdoor exhibitions of “Wartime Posters” by contemporary Ukrainian artists, graphic designers and illustrators were realized in Zaporizhzhia: 18 personal exhibitions and a group project from France called “Les Arts contre la Guerre”, which were included into the printed edition of the same name – a collection of 453 graphic artworks.

All posters in this publication both reflect and record events, war crimes, and false russian propaganda against Ukraine.

This unique book was created in Ukraine during active hostilities in 2023 with the support of the Restoration of cultural and artistic activities grant program of the Ukrainian cultural foundation. It was published with the circulation of 1000 copies in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv during blackouts due to a destroyed energy system by russian constant missile attacks. The limited edition of the book was delivered directly from Ukraine to the US specially for the public presentations.

Starting from 2022, the exhibition project with Ukrainian wartime posters was presented three times in the USA: New York, Colorado Springs and Los Angeles. In Europe, the project was presented in Berlin (Germany), Reading (United Kingdom), Warsaw (Poland), and partially in Copenhagen (Denmark) and Eindhoven (Netherlands). In February-August 2024, the book “Wartime Posters” was presented in Warsaw (Poland), twice in New York (USA) and in Berlin (Germany).

Olena Speranska is author and curator of the book “Wartime Posters” 2022-2023; art manager, who has been organizing projects of the international symposium of contemporary art BIRUCHIY for 15 years including implementation of 18 international art residencies & more than 50 multimedia exhibitions of contemporary art in Ukraine and other countries as Italy, Canada, Poland, Montenegro, Germany, USA and the United Kingdom; author of the educational lecture program for kids “PRO: contemporary art” that was implemented in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine in 2019.
