Mark Mazower’s (Ira D. Wallach Professor of World Order Studies; Director of Columbia’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination) new book The Greek Revolution: 1821 and the Making of Modern Europe was reviewed by Alexander Clapp in the London Review of Books (June 9, 2022).
In one brilliant chapter Mazower focuses on the confounding wartime situation of the largely Catholic island of Syros, which continued to pay taxes to the sultan well into the conflict for the simple reason that little was to be gained from joining the Greek cause.
