Registration REQUIRED by 4pm on November 16, 2026 in order to attend this event.

Please join the Harriman Institute for a book talk by Miriam Dobson. Moderated by Yana Skorobogatov.

The Unorthodox offers a new history of Ukraine and Russia’s Protestant communities, from the religious resurgence of World War II to the early 1980s. In this talk, Dobson focuses on the life of one Protestant woman, Lidiia Vins, to explore three of the book’s themes: gender relations within Baptist congregations; the place of Protestant writings within the history of Soviet dissent; and their reception overseas during the late Cold War.

Miriam Dobson is a Reader in Modern History at the University of Sheffield where she has taught since 2004. She is the author of Khrushchev’s Cold Summer: Gulag Returnees, Crime, and the Fate of Reform after Stalin (2009) and The Unorthodox: Soviet Protestants in Cold-War Ukraine and Russia (Cornell University Press, 2026).
