Harriman Program Assistant

Eligibility: Second-year MARS-REERS students
Period: 8/26/2024-5/15/2025
$28 an hour for 12-15 hours per week
Reporting to: Rebecca Dalton, Alla Rachkov, and Eileen Huhn

  • Assist in the organization of student-focused events
  • Regularly meet and coordinate with your supervisor
  • Responsible for outreach to graduate and undergraduate students
  • Prepare for and assist with Harriman Institute events as needed
  • Attend all student-focused events
  • Post student life events to Harriman’s Instagram
  • Attend SIPA and MARS-REERS orientation
  • Other duties as assigned

ECEC Program Assistant

Eligibility: Second-year MARS-REERS students
Period: 8/26/2024-5/15/2025
$28 an hour for 12-15 hours per week
Reporting to: Co-Directors of ECEC, Alla Rachkov, Rebecca Dalton

  • Assist in the organization of ECEC events
  • Attend ECEC events and write event reports
  • Post ECEC student interest news on Harriman’s Instagram
  • Responsible for outreach to students interested in East Central Europe
  • Attend student-focused events
  • Attend SIPA and MARS-REERS Orientation
  • Other duties as assigned

SIPA Program Assistant

Eligibility: Second-year SIPA students
Period: 8/26/2024-5/15/2025
$28 an hour for 12-15 hours per week
Reporting to Rebecca Dalton, Alla Rachkov, and Eileen Huhn

  • Assist in the organization of student-focused events, including happy hours, career panels, and other social events
  • Responsible for outreach to SIPA students
  • Prepare for and assist with Harriman Institute events as needed
  • Attend student-focused events
  • Post student life events to Harriman’s Instagram
  • Attend SIPA and MARS-REERS Orientation events
  • Other duties as assigned

Ukrainian Studies Program Assistant

Eligibility: Second-year Masters students
Period: 8/26/2024-5/15/2025
$28 an hour for 12-15 hours per week
Reporting to: Mark Andrycyzk and Alla Rachkov

  • Assist in the organization of Ukrainian events
  • Attend Ukrainian events and write event reports to be submitted to local publications
  • Post Ukrainian student interest news on Harriman’s Instagram
  • Responsible for outreach to students interested in Ukraine
  • Attend all student-focused events
  • Other duties as assigned

PURR Program Assistant (Program on US Russia Relations)

Eligibility: First- and second-year Masters students
Period: 9/3/2024-5/15/2025
$28 per hour for 12 hours per week
Reporting to: Prof. Elise Giuliano

Work with Prof. Giuliano to conceptualize and organize talks and panels for the Program on US-Russian Relations (PURR). There are two kinds of PURR events: Student PURR events are only for students, while general PURR events are open to the general public. The format includes book talks, panels with multiple speakers, films, etc. The position has two main requirements: (1) brainstorming and (2) organizing.

1. Brainstorming:

  • Brainstorm topics and select speakers for PURR events
  • Discuss ideas for talks, panels, book talks with Prof. Giuliano
  • Research subject matter and relevant
  • Poll students to select topics/speakers for Student PURR

2. Organizing:

  • Assist in writing event descriptions for the event page and listserve
  • Communicate with relevant Columbia centers and institutes when they are co-sponsoring events.
  • Communicate with other professors & post-docs when co-planning.
  • Coordinate with staff & speakers to ensure timely receipt of bios and headshots
  • Prepare and schedule announcements of PURR in MailChimp
  • Email the announcement to specific professors and Saltzman Institute prior to an event to publicize it
  • Liaison with invited speaker(s) and Harriman staff to make travel plans and hotel reservations for invitees
  • Organize group dinners following events; coordinate with speakers and invitees; make reservations at local restaurants; coordinate with staff to make payments
  • Invite individual Harriman and affiliated students based on their interest in a particular subject or speakers
  • Help organize refreshments (wine & cheese or dinner) at Student PURR events
  • Following the conclusion of each event: create a document recording the events, speakers, dates, and relevant links; coordinate with staff to ensure event recordings appear on the Harriman’s website and YouTube channel; coordinate with staff to publicize event recordings through Harriman’s newsletters and social media as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned
