The Ukrainian Film Club of Columbia University will resume its 2022-23 season by screening and discussing Uke: The Untold Story of Hockey Legends (2020) directed by Volodymyr Mula.

This gripping feature documentary celebrates the Ukrainian contribution to North American hockey and the spectacular history of the National Hockey League. More than fifty players of Ukrainian origin became champions of the NHL over a hundred years of its existence, including one of the greatest hockey legends, Wayne Gretzky. The film’s director Volodymyr Mula will attend the event in person to discuss his film with the audience.

Yuri Shevchuk will introduce director Volodymyr Mula and his film and lead the discussion.

Volodymyr Mula is a Ukrainian filmmaker, producer, sports reporter, journalist, and TV host. He was born October 22, 1989 in Horodenka, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine. In 2014 he produced the LiveTime TV show and live broadcasts of the Eurovision Song Contest and worked as a special reporter of 1+1 TV Channel and Radio Lvivska Khvylia during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. From 2014-2016 he was a TV Host, reporter, and producer of the Hromadske TV Sport Show. Mula is the author of a series of reports on Rio de Janeiro and the infotainment project Around the Baltic States. In 2015 Mula shot American Dream, a documentary about immigrants from post-Soviet countries to the United States. The film depicts a Ukrainian journalist’s trip in a long-haul truck. It covered 11 US states, two oceans, two borders, and 6,000 miles of roads. In 2016, he worked as a special reporter for the BBC Ukrainian Service during Euro 2016 in France and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He filmed the sequel American Dream. In Search of Truth, a feature documentary. In it, he used the stories of eight immigrants from Ukraine building successful professional careers in the United States. In 2018 he was a special reporter on ICTV during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. After the outbreak of the all-out Russian aggression, Mula has been working as a volunteer raising funds in support of Ukrainian army and civilians.
