Please join the East Central European Center and the Harriman Institute for a lecture and conversation with Andrzej Poczobut. Moderated by Małgorzata Mazurek.

Born on 16 April 1973, Andrzej Poczobut is an essayist, journalist, columnist, blogger, poet, and musician. He worked for Gazeta Wyborcza – a Polish daily newspaper – and several Belarusian media outlets. On March 25, 2021, he was detained for “incitement to racial, national, or religious hatred or discord.” In February 2023, Poczobut was sentenced to eight years in prison for promoting “hatred” and “calling for sanctions” against the regime. He was released in April 2026 in a prisoner swap and transferred to Poland. Poczobut received the Sakharov Prize in October 2025 from the European Parliament and was named Grand Press Journalist of the Year in Poland twice (2011 and 2021). He is the author of the book System Belarus (2013), which examines the mechanisms of repression under Lukashenko’s rule.
