Jack Sutherland is a MARS-REERS student at the Harriman Institute. He received his BA (2022) in Russian Language and Literature with a Specialization in Philosophy from Kenyon College. Jack’s senior thesis focused on the personal and intellectual relationship between L. N. Tolstoy and N. F. Fyodorov. The project examined the thinkers’ clashing views on the nature of death through selected translations of The Death of Ivan Ilyich, A Confession, and The Common Task. At Harriman, Jack’s focus has pivoted to Central Asian politics.
