E-Book Reedition of “Karel Čapek” by William E. Harkins
July 16, 2026

Plunkett Lake Press has published an e-book reedition of Karel Čapek by our late colleague William E. Harkins (Professor Emeritus, Department of Slavic Languages; Director of the Russian Institute 1974-76, 1980-81). Originally released in 1962, the book was the first English-language study of the visionary Czech playwright and author. It has been praised by scholars and publications such as The Slavic Review for its comprehensiveness and compelling insights into Čapek’s work, life, and the trajectory of his artistic development. The book deeply explores Čapek’s three main motifs — “total destruction, man’s condition of siege, and his anxiety” — which continue to reflect the anxieties of our modern world.
