Thomas Kent writes about a mysterious new social media propaganda campaign targeted at West Africa that is using Russian-style propaganda tactics against Russia. The West African countries are likely being targeted because of the strong relationships they’ve forged with Moscow. Several social accounts have been created that are counterfeit versions of Russian sites. They display fake headlines and doctored videos and images that denounce the junta leadership of West African countries and paint favorable images of the U.S. and the EU. Kent questions the ethics and practicality of the this tactic, as “large-scale use of deceit to fight deceit threatens the overall information environment.”
